Homeless woman is sleeping in dirt every night. Then stranger builds her a tiny home from scratch

“When someone falls down, you pick them up. That’s what you do.”

Elvis Summers utters this statement above as he walks the streets of Los Angeles, hoping to give to homeless people in the community a better quality of life. In his foundation called Starting Human, Elvis raises money in order to build small homes for homeless people. These homes, nicknamed Tiny Houses, are not large in size, ranging around 70-80 square feet in size, but they are large in importance. The homeless people who receive Tiny Houses say it helps them out tremendously.

“I was able to go in there, close the door, and feel secure, as opposed to being out here in the streets, with no sense of security,” says one man.

Tiny Houses are built in order to provide shelter and protection from assault and theft, which are crimes that commonly occur amongst homeless people. Elvis says that “Some of these gangbangers know that veterans get automatic deposits every month.” Because of this, homeless veterans have been constantly robbed on the streets. But with the new construction of Tiny Houses, crimes against the homeless, especially homeless veterans, has been reduced.

As positive and uplifting as this movement has been, city officials have tried to remove a number of these Tiny Houses from the streets. It is frustrating, especially for Elvis, seeing his long hours of work being undone by these city officials. The day he had to to take these houses away from the homeless people, Elvis says, “[It was] one of the hardest days of his life.”

Despite the obstacles, Elvis has continued with his Tiny Houses initiative and is currently partnering up with engineers to build the first mobile showers. He not only aims to continue building more houses for the homeless, but also implement showers into these homes, so that these people have places to shower. Land has been donated in order to place these houses somewhere, which works out for everyone involved.

This is an incredible story, and we owe our thanks to people like Elvis Summers, for changing the world for the better and giving homeless people the opportunities to live life much more comfortably.
