Disney Assures Everyone That Mulan Will Not Fall in Love With a White Guy

Fans have been vocal in urging Disney not to cast a white male lead in the upcoming live-action remake of the animated epic Mulan. The widespread outcry followed a recently published essay authored by someone who claimed to have seen the planned movie’s spec script recently purchased by Disney.

According to the writer, the first film’s draft featured a “30-something European trader” who will fall in love with Mulan and later on help in defending China.

Vulture however reported that Disney has hired new writers after purchasing the particular script. Writers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (Jurassic World) have been brought in to work on the script and updates on the drafts should make fans excited.

A source close to the production reportedly spoke with Vulture, saying that the movie will feature an Asian love interest after all.

“The spec script was a jumping-off point for a new take on the story that draws from both the literary ballad of Mulan and Disney’s 1998 animated film,” the source claimed. “Mulan is and will always be the lead character in the story, and all primary roles, including the love interest, are Chinese.”

A Chinese actress is also confirmed to play Mulan’s character and the production will soon conduct a “global casting search” to find the right lead.
