Sony is Making Their Own Mulan Movie with a ‘Game of Thrones’ Director

One of the directors of the massively popular TV show “Game of Thrones” has been tapped to direct Sony Pictures’ own live-action Mulan film.

The studio has chosen Alex Graves, who has directed several episodes of HBO’s hit fantasy series, to direct Sony’s version of Mulan, according to Deadline. Before landing on “Game of Thrones”, Graves began his directing career as a director for episodes of “Ally McBeal”, “Sports Night”, “The Practice”, “The West Wing” and several other TV hits.

Sony’s take on the widely recognized character, not to be mistaken with Disney’s upcoming flick with a 2018 release date, was announced just a month ago, with very little details revealed.

Disney’s highly anticipated version has recently drawn flack from the Asian American community after reports of an early draft of that script revealed a white male love interest will be paired with Mulan’s character. Disney has since denied the report and has promised that Mulan will fall in love with an Asian man.

Sony’s take will be jointly produced with a Chinese production company and will likely to cast a Chinese lead. The film, to be written by Jason Keller and produced by Doug Belgrad’s 2.0 Entertainment firm, is set to be done through Sony Pictures International Production.

While expected to be treated differently, Sony’s live-action Mulan will still be based on the popular Chinese legend about a girl who pretends to be a man in order to take her ill father’s spot in the Chinese Imperial Army.
