Here's what's new on Netflix in June 2017

As the number of shows and movies available to stream in Australia continues to grow at an impressive rate, it can be tough to keep up with all the new additions to each streaming service each month.

We've all come to anticipate a new stable of Netflix Originals releases throughout each month, but figuring out which shows they are and when exactly they become available isn't so easy. And what about the large number licensed shows and films that are made available to stream, if only for a limited time?

In an effort to keep you informed of the best shows and movies that are in the process of being added to Netflix, we'll be bringing you an updated list of what you can expect on the service on a monthly basis.

Not only that, we'll also be singling out the biggest releases, as well as a number of quality TV shows and films which we believe deserve your time.

Anyway, enough jabbering – here's what's new on Netflix in June 2017.

TV shows highlights for June, 2017

GLOW (Season 1): From the makers of Orange is the New Black comes GLOW, a fictionalised take on the real-life all-women professional wrestling league of the same name that existed during the '80s. Why's it called GLOW? It stands for Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, so expect a cast of strong ladies (including Community's Alison Brie) kicking butt while wearing outrageous spandex outfits. Release date: June 23, 2017.

Orange is the New Black (Season 5): Everyone's favourite group of incarcerated women is back with the fifth season of Orange is the New Black. Season four ended on quite a down note, with fan-favourite Lolly (Lori Petty) being dragged away to a psych ward. We she be back? We'll have to wait and see. Release date: June 9, 2017.

Fargo (Season 2): Picking up with an entirely new story, Fargo season 2 continues the anthology premise established in the first season with a whole new set of characters and a different time period. Beautician Peggy (Kirsten Dunst) is finds herself in a horrific predicament after accidentally running over a criminal (Kieran Culkin) and attempting to cover it up. We wouldn't dream of spoiling anything else from this twisted tale for you. Release date: June 16, 2017.

Movies highlights for June, 2017

Okja: From visionary Korean director Bong Joon Ho (Snowpiercer, The Host, Memories of Murder) comes Okja, a Netflix Original film that sees a young girl named Mija (An Seo Hyun) risk everything to protect her animal friend Okja – a huge, friendly hippo-like creature created by a multi-national company for food purposes. Also stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Tilda Swinton and Paul Dano. Release date: June 28, 2017.

Suicide Squad: What do you do when the arrival of Superman ushers in a new age of super-powered threats to national security? If you're agent Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), you put together a team of expendable super villains including the likes of Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Deadshot (Will Smith), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) and bogan-extraordinaire Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney) to do your dirty work for you. Release date: June 7, 2017.

Munich: One of Steven Spielberg's darkest films, Munich tells the story of a real-life operation that saw Israeli Mossad agents retaliate against the men they believed responsible for the massacre at the 1972 Summer Olympics which left the entire Israeli team dead. Stars Eric Bana and Daniel Craig. Release date: June 30, 2017.

The Last Samurai: Tom Cruise has made some pretty epic films throughout his career, and The Last Samurai may be the biggest of them all. Cruise plays a Civil War veteran who's hired to train a modernised Japanese military to destroy the last remaining samurai in Japan. Of course, he's captured during battle by said samurai and quickly becomes enamoured by their beliefs and way of life. Now, he must fight to defend the honour of the samurai he was once hired to kill. Release date: June 25, 2017.

Harry Potter 4-movie marathon: Rejoice, Potter fans! Netflix is adding Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire to its service on June 16, so get ready for a magical marathon! Release date: June 9, 2017.
