Brides Around the World Are Now Turning Kimonos into Wedding Gowns

Kimonos are the new wedding gowns, y’all.

If you haven’t heard yet, the trend appears to have sprung from a Japanese company called The Oriental Wasou, which claims to have “helped many beautiful brides succeed, in their fairytale fantasy, on their very special day.”

The magical garments work by folding and tying parts of the furisode, a type of kimono distinguished by its long sleeves and traditionally worn in formal Japanese ceremonies, such as the “Coming of Age” at 20.

The result is an ingenious Western-style silhouette that exudes Japan’s beautiful tradition — perfect for modern weddings.

The trend has now reached American shores, with some already cashing in. In Hawaii, a bridal company called Halelokahi created its own designs to the delight of kimono-aficionados everywhere.

Halelokahi’s Mami Ogiwara told Hawaii News Now, “We want to keep the tradition alive as much as possible.”

If anything, this modern spin on the kimono is not only beautiful but cost-efficient, as buyers literally get two dresses in one convenient garment.

While not exactly for weddings, men have been getting chic, East-meets-West upgrades in the kimono as well.
