10 things in tech you need to know today (TWTR, TSLA)
Good morning! Here's the technology news you need to know this Friday.
1. Elon Musk unveiled Tesla's first electric truck on Thursday evening, promising greater safety and efficiency than a diesel vehicle. The vehicles will be charged with a new network of high-speed chargers called Megachargers.
2. Tesla also announced a surprise new model of its Roadster sportscar on Thursday evening, at a base cost of $200,000 (£150,000). The vehicle will be able to do 0-60 mph in 1.9 seconds.
3. Security researchers have found a security flaw in Amazon's new Key service, which lets couriers unlock your front door with a smart lock. The kit includes a security camera, but researchers found it was possible to disable this through Wi-Fi.
4. Airbnb acquired Accomable, a startup which offers accommodation suitable for guests with disabilities, for an unknown amount. The company said it hired the founders and most of the staff to build out its wheelchair-accessible housing inventory.
5. EA Games has temporarily suspended a micropayments feature in the new "Star Wars Battlefront 2" game, which caused massive player outrage. Players worried that those who paid real money would have an in-game advantage.
6. Boston Dynamics has unveiled a slightly terrifying backflipping robot, which can navigate awkward jumps and somersault. The robot is an updated version of Atlas, its humanoid robot.
7. Apple's diversity chief is leaving after less than a year on the job. Denise Young Smith joined the firm in May, and had caused controversy by suggesting a group of "12, white, blue-eyed blonde men" in a room could be diverse.
8. Hundreds of poorer residents living next to the future site of a school funded by Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan were evicted on Wednesday. A spokesman for the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative said it was unaware of the evictions, but the move highlighted the growing wealth gap in Silicon Valley's East Palo Alto.
9. Apple has fixed an iPhone X bug that stopped the device working in chilly weather. A software update should fix the problem of touchscreens not responding when it's cold.
10. Amazon won the UK rights to broadcast the ATP World Tour, and will stream 37 men's games to British Prime subscribers. The company won the rights from Sky, amid signs the firm will step up its sports content.
