Barr has since apologized, but appears to now blame her behavior on Ambien, a sleep-aide in now-deleted tweets.
However, the Ashleigh Koss, a spokeswoman for Sanofi, the maker of Ambien, said in a written statement Wednesday, “While all pharmaceutical treatments have side effects, racism is not a known side effect of any Sanofi medication.”
People of all races, religions and nationalities work at Sanofi every day to improve the lives of people around the world. While all pharmaceutical treatments have side effects, racism is not a known side effect of any Sanofi medication.

Twitter users also chimed in, including Dr. Eugene Gu and George Takei.
Ambien has quite a few side effects but racism isn’t one of them. Even if Roseanne wanted to claim she had an Ambien blackout and was sleep tweeting, that racism had to come from somewhere deep within.

Roseanne claims she was on Ambien at the time of her tweet. Sanofi-Aventis quickly amended their ads to include “may cause racism, ignorance, bigotry, support of authoritarians and demagogues, and loss of a hit television show. See your psychiatrist for assistance.”

Barr has in the past been criticized multiple times for controversial, racist, and conspiracy theory tweets.
More recently, on the the revival’s third episode, Barr’s character and husband, played by John Goodman, made a joke regarding two of other shows on ABC that feature diverse casts. In the episode, Barr and her character’s husband wake up on their couch after having fallen asleep in front of the television. Goodman’s character says, “We missed all the shows about black and Asian families.” Barr’s character responds, “They’re just like us. There, now you’re all caught up.”
The joke, aimed at the shows “Black-ish” and “Fresh Off the Boat,” was perceived by many as demeaning to diverse shows.
