Rude Local Fans Throw Eggs at South Korean Team Coming Back From the World Cup

Upon returning home from their World Cup stint, the South Korean soccer team received an unpleasant welcome from unhappy fans who decided to pelt them with eggs and Union Jack pillows.

Fresh from eliminating World Cup defending champions Germany, Son Heung-min, and his teammates were in high spirits returning home despite not being able to stay longer in Russia for the rest of the games.

However, the players were still greeted with animosity by some rude audience members who threw items at them during a press conference, according to The Sun.

While no one got hurt, forward Son Heung Min, who also plays for Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur, almost got hit by one of the thrown eggs.

Despite being visibly taken aback by the hostile reaction, the team chose to remain in their place on the stage.

“Thank you to all of you who came today. I am sorry to our fans that we didn’t live up to our promise of reaching the knockout stage but I think we all saw some hope from the win over Germany. But we won’t get carried away with that bit of success, and we will continue to work hard,” Son Heung Min said.

Despite their victory over Germany, South Korea was eliminated after Mexico lost to Sweden 3-0. Had the Mexican team defeated the Swedes, the South Korean team would have advanced along with Mexico.

Fortunately, some of the fans threw flowers and scarves at them to celebrate their efforts at the tough international tournament.

Fans of the team have even launched petitions on the website of South Korea’s presidential office to call for the waiving of the mandatory military service for Son and some other stars of the national team, the Wahington Post reports.
