Epic Videos Capture Tsunami Crashing Into Indonesian Island After 7.7-Magnitude Earthquake

A 7.7 magnitude earthquake that rocked the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia on Friday was followed by a tsunami hours after authorities lifted its warning.

Footage of a six-foot wave crashed into the city of Palu, knocking down everything in its path, including trees and buildings, while residents ran for their lives screaming.

The video was posted on Twitter by PMII Channel with the hashtag gempa (or “earthquake” in Indonesian).

The provincial capital has a population of more than 300,000, according to NBC News.

The waters began to subside almost immediately after the tsunami landed at 5:48 p.m. local time, but no casualties have been reported.

Hary Tirto Djatmiko, a spokesman for Indonesia’s geophysics agency, confirmed the tsunami and the agency was still collecting information about the situation.

The tsunami warning was reportedly lifted about half an hour following the earthquake, officials said.

Netizens took to social media after being affected by the natural disaster, with one commenting, “This is the first major tsunami event in south east [sic] Asia since the catastrophic 2004 Boxing Day tsunami.”
