Nokia 7.1 announced, promises beautiful HDR-ready display and dual Zeiss optics

UPDATE: The Nokia 7.1 announcement has been updated with US and Australian pricing and release date information. Details below.

The Nokia 7.1 has been officially unveiled at a launch event in London, promising improved Zeiss optics, a beautiful viewing experience and a new generation of Nokia design.

On the rear, you'll find two Zeiss-tuned cameras, with a 12MP primary camera alongside a 5MP depth sensing camera, allowing for striking depth-of-field portrait shots.

It has a 5.8-inch FullHD+ display that boasts HMD's new PureDisplay technology, which is born from a partnership with Pixelworks that's said to enhance your viewing experience.

HDR support is also included for a smooth and color-accurate video experience, and it'll automatically adjust contrast and brightness to suit your real life environment. The Nokia 7.1 will also upscale SDR content to HDR in real time, which should enhance color, increase brightness and expand the dynamic range of any video content that graces the display.

Android Pie incoming

The Nokia 7.1 will come with Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box, with an update to the latest Android 9 Pie software slated for later this month. It's said to bring a suite of AI-powered features to the phone.

It's also signed up to Google's Android One program, guaranteeing the Nokia 7.1 at least two years of major Android updates, and three years of security updates, effectively ensuring the handset will have a good lifespan.

Under the hood, you'll find a Snapdragon 636 chipset, which HMD says will offer enhanced performance while keeping power consumption down.

The handset will also sport USB Type-C fast charging, which HMD says will provide a 50% recharge in just 30 minutes.

When's it out?

The new Nokia 7.1 will release in the US on October 28 at $349, with pre-orders opening on October 5 at Amazon, Best Buy and B&H.

In the UK, you'll be able to pick up the handset from EE and Carphone Warehouse for £299 from October 17.

Australians will be able to purchase the Nokia 7.1 outright from JB Hi-Fi and Harvey Norman stores from October 17 for AU$499 in the Gloss Midnight Blue color option. Alternatively, the phone will also be available for AU$199 on a JB Hi-Fi Mobile $65 per month BYO plan.
