Singaporean Hawker Offered $1.4 Million For Their Family Wanton Noodle Recipe, Turns Offer Down

An anonymous individual reportedly offered the owner of Kok Kee Wanton Noodle, locally known as one of the most famous hawker stalls in Singapore, 2 million Singaporean dollars ($1.4 million) to buy their acclaimed secret recipe for wanton mee.

The famous wanton mee noodle stall, which has been in operation for years now, suddenly closed one of its two branches in 2016, with some fans speculating the close could be related to the owner suffering from health complications, according to World of Buzz.

After years of waiting, fans were delighted to hear that their favorite noodle stall is now set to reopen this March 2019, with the owner returning to run the food stall along with his two children, China Press reported.

While speaking to reporters, the 35-year-old son and his 32-year-old sister said they are still learning to ensure every bowl of their famous wanton mee has the “traditional taste” that many patrons loved.

A smooth reopening has brought about several offers from potential investors. One of the parties interested in expanding the brand offered the family a huge amount of money to buy their secret recipe.

Aside from offers to open branches overseas, one of the parties expressed their interest to buy the recipe for 2 million Singaporean dollars ($1.4 million), but the family turned the offer down.

Obviously, investors will want to see high returns but for now, we don’t wish to get rich quick by earning a lump sum of money. Of course, earning money is a must, but we want to focus more on perfecting the craft and make sure the younger generation get to taste our noodles,” the son told a reporter.

He also added that branching out would be considered once they’d found someone who is as passionate as them in making the food.

There are many other wanton mee stalls in Singapore, but what truly sets this one apart from the others is their lard-based sauce and their springy noodles. They also make use of a homemade chilli sauce that adds a distinct flavor to the dish which many customers seem to crave, World of Buzz noted.

Those who’d like to try Kok Kee Wanton Noodle can check out their stall at 30 Foch Road.
