President Donald Trump said he was tested for COVID-19 after one of his counselors Hope Hicks tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

Trump told Fox News's Sean Hannity on Thursday that he is still awaiting the results.

"Whether we quarantine or whether we have it, I don't know," Trump said. "We'll see what happens. Who knows."

Hicks accompanied Trump aboard Air Force One to and from the first presidential debate on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Hicks also traveled with Trump and attended a Trump rally in Minnesota, CNN reported.

She told people close to her that she is experiencing some of the symptoms of COVID-19, Bloomberg News reported.

White House officials have been aware since Wednesday evening that Hicks had the virus, according to The New York Times,

"The president takes the health and safety of himself and everyone who works in support of him and the American people very seriously," White House spokesman Judd Deere told Business Insider.

"White House Operations collaborates with the Physician to the President and the White House Military Office to ensure all plans and procedures incorporate current CDC guidance and best practices for limiting Covid-19 exposure to the greatest extent possible both on complex and when the president is traveling," he added.

This story is developing.
