An organizer of an annual Hong Kong vigil to commemorate China's 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown was arrested on Friday, the 32nd anniversary of the violent attack on protesters.

Chow Hang Tung, vice-chairwoman of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, was accused of promoting an unauthorized assembly, Reuters reported.

She was arrested outside her officers by plain clothes officers who took her away in a black car, according to AFP.

Chiu Yan Loy, executive member of the Alliance, told Reuters that he believed Chow was arrested to scare others away from gathering.

Hong Kong blocked off Victoria Park - where the Tiananmen crackdown vigil is normally held - ahead of the anniversary, but people still gathered in surrounding areas.

This year's anniversary is the first since Beijing enacted a contentious national security law for Hong Kong that has been used to crackdown on pro-democracy activity.

Reuters reported that at least five other people were arrested along with Chow in connection with the vigil.
