  • Chris Wallace is leaving Fox News, he announced on "Fox News Sunday."
  • Wallace joined the network in 2003 after working at ABC News, and before that, NBC News.
  • The Sunday broadcast of "Fox News Sunday" was his last, Fox News confirmed.

Chris Wallace, the moderator of "Fox News Sunday," is leaving Fox News, he announced during a broadcast of his show.

His final episode of "Fox News Sunday" was the one that aired Sunday, he said at the conclusion of the broadcast.

"Eighteen years ago, the bosses here at Fox promised me they would never interfere with a guest I booked or a question I asked. And they kept that promise," Wallace said. "I have been free to report to the best of my ability, to cover the stories I think are important, to hold our country's leaders to account. It's been a great ride."

Wallace, 74, joined Fox News in 2003. From 1989 to 2003, he worked at ABC News, and before that, Wallace rose to fame at NBC News as a co-anchor of the "TODAY" show and moderator of "Meet the Press," according to a 2020 profile by The New York Times.

"It may sound corny, but I feel we've built a community here," Wallace told viewers during his send-off Sunday. "There's a lot you can do on Sunday mornings. The fact you've chosen to spend this hour with us is something I cherish."

Wallace, who during his career has moderated presidential debates and been praised as one of Fox News' most unbiased and trusted journalists, said he decided to leave the network to "go beyond politics" and explore other interests. He said he was "ready for a new adventure." He did not share details of what he planned to do next, though he asked his Fox News viewers to "check it out."

Fox News confirmed the news in a statement to Insider on Sunday.

"We are extremely proud of our journalism and the stellar team that Chris Wallace was a part of for 18 years. The legacy of FOX News Sunday will continue with our star journalists, many of whom will rotate in the position until a permanent host is named," the network spokesperson said.
