  • Starting a second job can allow you to explore your passions at the same time as earning extra cash.
  • If you have to work a side-hustle alongside a full-time job, though, it can be exhausting.
  • One entrepreneur told CNBC how she has earned six figures with her second job.

Working a second job can obviously be a great way of boosting your income.

It can also be a great way of exploring how it may be feasible to do something you really enjoy.

That said, it can be a difficult thing to start, as you need to ensure you have enough time in your current schedule.

Before you give up, however, it may be reassuring to know that there are others who manage it.

Seven years ago Jennifer Shealey was working two jobs. She decided to sign up with freelancer platform Fiverr so she could offer her services in digital marketing.

It was a decision that changed her life.

"I was basically making more with Fiverr than I was with those two jobs together," she told CNBC Make It.

Since starting on the platform, her side hustle has earned her more than $366,000 in sales.

Shealey revealed to CNBC Make It the key things she learned along the way about how to get a new side hustle off the ground while juggling it with a full-time job.

Find out what you really love to do

If you're going to add more work to your working day and it's already eight hours long, you need to make sure you're doing something you actually enjoy.

The first thing Shealey said to CNBC is that you must stop and think about what you're actually passionate about.

She recommended that you "just start," as soon as you know what you are passionate about.

"I think that's what gets people tripped up, especially because we're constantly on social media and we're looking for this perfection and you don't need perfection," she said.

"You just need heart and a vision."

One of the hardest things about starting a business is finding your first clients.

To make this easier, Shealey recommended using a freelance platform, where you can connect with people who may need your services.

That way, you can start developing your brand little by little.

This was how Shealey started to get her freelance work off the ground..

Set a schedule and stick to it

It's rare for anyone to have much free time — especially when you try to start a second job.

To avoid feeling totally overwhelmed and to be able to manage everything properly, Shealey recommended setting a schedule for your second job.

Doing so even when it meant sacrificing leisure time helped her to get her idea off the ground.

"I sacrificed so that I didn't go to parties, and I said "no" to a lot of things, because I was really wanting to focus on Fiverr," she said.

Start by being flexible with rates

Getting paid for your first few jobs after starting a new business is certainly satisfying. However, submitting invoices and setting your rates can be a bit complex initially.

Shealey advised being a little flexible with pricing at first and then increasing it as your business grows.

She said that when she started, her rate for designing Facebook adverts was just $5.

"Some people might find that silly starting out, like, 'Why would you do that?' Well, sometimes you have to do what you got to do to put your name out there," she said.

She steadily increased her prices and now charges anything from $20 to $125.

"I just wouldn't give up. I didn't see a huge return in the first three years, and I was busy working other part-time jobs," she said. "But, I just wouldn't lose heart."
