President Joe Biden joked about his falling approval rating during "The Tonight Show" with Jimmy Fallon on Friday night.

When asked by Fallon if he paid attention to approval ratings, the president quipped: "I was paying attention when they were in the mid-60s, but now that they're in the 40s, I don't pay attention anymore."

Jimmy Fallon replied that he appreciated the president's honesty.

"You came in hot, and then you got to medium, and now you're at a low, but you just got to keep your head down, right, and keep doing the right thing," Fallon said.

President Biden's rating has been underwater since August 30, when US troops withdrew from Afghanistan. As of December 11, it stands at 50.7%, according to poll tracker FiveThirtyEight.

"We've been in less than a year. A lot has happened," President Biden told Fallon.

"And look, people are afraid, people are worried, and people are getting so much inaccurate information to them. I don't mean about me. I mean about their situation. They're being told that Armageddon is on the way."

"The truth is the economy has grown more than it has any time in close to 60 years, the unemployment rate is down to 4.2%, it's going to go lower in my view."

The president acknowledged that Americans are troubled by higher inflation rates on items such as gas, along with uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, but said that his government was trying to remedy it.

"There's a lot of anxiety, and my job is to be straightforward, shoot from the shoulder, let people know exactly what the truth is, and layout how I'm going to try and make life better for them," Biden said.
