  • Zelenskyy called the United Nations ineffective while addressing Japanese lawmakers Wednesday.
  • He said that the international organization needs an "injection of honesty."
  • Zelenskyy has called on the UN, NATO, European Union, and Western nations to increase their support of Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized the United Nations and its Security Council on Wednesday, saying they have been ineffective during Russia's month-long war against Ukraine.

"You see that international institutions have not worked," Zelenskyy said in a video address to Japanese lawmakers on Wednesday. "Even the UN and the Security Council... What can they do? They need reform."

He added: "They need an injection of honesty to become effective. To really decide and really influence, not just discuss."

Zelenskyy has called on the UN, NATO, European Union, and Western nations to increase their support of Ukraine since Russia invaded in February.

Ukraine and Western allies have slammed Russia and its diplomats at the UN, scrutinizing false claims about the war and trolling them on social media.

UN discourse seems to have failed, however, to produce any meaningful progress in subduing Russia's attack against Ukraine.

Secretary-General António Guterres has urged Russia to withdraw its forces from Ukraine and find a diplomatic solution to the conflict.

He said earlier in March that he's been in contact with numerous countries in an attempt to mediate the war like China, France, Germany, and Israel.

But one month after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his forces to invade Ukraine, ongoing peace talks have yielded little progress.

While Russian forces appeared to have largely stalled across multiple fronts, shelters, hospitals, and homes have been targeted by Russian attacks.
