HBO Max's latest original drama, "The Staircase," is based on the real-life events surrounding the death of Kathleen Peterson in 2001. The first three episodes of the miniseries debuted on May 5. 

Michael Peterson (Colin Firth) finds his life thrown into a frenzy when he discovers his wife Kathleen (Toni Collette) unconscious at the bottom of their stairs. She is later declared dead — and Michael is suspect number one. "The Staircase" paints a picture of the couple's relationship and details the media circus that engulfs the household as Michael is charged with his wife's murder, despite his pleas of innocence.

"The Staircase" is inspired by and based on the true-crime docuseries of the same name. HBO's new 2022 miniseries is created by Antonio Campos and Maggie Cohn, with Rosemarie DeWitt, Juliette Binoche, Parker Posey, Sophie Turner, and Odessa Young as part of the cast.

Early reviews for the show have been positive, and "The Staircase" currently holds a "91 Fresh" rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. 

How to watch 'The Staircase'

"The Staircase" is available to watch exclusively on HBO Max. New episodes will debut weekly every Thursday through June 9. 

You can stream new episodes as they premiere, and watch the rest of HBO Max's huge library of content, with an ad-supported subscription for only $10 a month. If you'd prefer to skip the ads, you can opt for the slightly pricier ad-free plan at $15 a month.
