Tesla is launching an investigation into a fatal accident involving a Model S that occurred Wednesday in the Netherlands, Dutch news broadcast station NOS reported.

A 53-year-old driver died when his Model S left the road and hit a tree at high speed, Electrek reported. The car caught on fire, and firefighters had difficulty extinguishing the flames.

NOS is reporting that Tesla personnel was on the scene to determine the cause of the accident.

"Tesla launched an investigation into the accident. Once the outcome is known, Tesla will share with the audience," a company spokesperson told NOS.

It's unclear at this time whether Autopilot was activated when the accident occurred.

A Tesla spokesperson did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.
