They called doctors from universities and hospitals to help a pregnant gorilla deliver

A gorilla at the Philadelphia Zoo had to beattended to by doctors after she failed to give birth 24 hours past due date. 17-year-old Kira had been pregnant and had shown signs of being in labor, but hadn’t given birth yet.

This was particularly alarming since gorilla births tend to be quick. The zoo keepers had to do something to help this member of the greatly endangered species. They called in a group of doctors sourced from the Thomas Jefferson University, the University of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, and the Presbyterian Hospital, to help Kira give birth. It was success!

They had to keep the little baby gorilla under close watch for the next 24 hours before they could hand him over to his mom. Kira and her small son are now doing great. She’s such a nice mom!
