Instagram Restores Some Order to Your Chaotic Feed

Two years after moving away from its simple, chronological feeds and toward Facebook-style algorithms, Instagram is now admitting that things have gotten a bit jumbled and chaotic. The company says it’s bringing some calm and order back.

“Today we’re introducing changes to give you more control over your feed and ensure the posts you see are timely,” Instagram writes. “Based on your feedback, we’re […] making changes to ensure that newer posts are more likely to appear first in feed.

“With these changes, your feed will feel more fresh, and you won’t miss the moments you care about.”

So if your friend posts a photo while you’re asleep, it’s more likely now that it’ll be one of the first things you see when you open up your Instagram feed in the morning.

Instagram is also putting feed refreshing in users’ hands. Instead of automatic refreshes that interrupt your flow and bump you to the top of your feed, there’s going to be a “New Posts” button that lets you refresh manually. Tap it and you’ll see new posts at the top, but avoid it and you’ll be able to continue browsing your feed in peace.

“Over the next few months, we’ll be sharing more about improvements we’re making to feed,” Instagram says. “Our goal is to be the best place to share and connect with the people and interests that matter most to you.”
