Amy Tan Speaks Spanish to Share a Simple Message to Racists on Twitter
Renowned Asian American author Amy Tan gave her response to the recent story of a U.S. border patrol agent stopping and demanding identification from U.S. citizen simply because she spoke Spanish. That story comes just a week after a New York lawyer was caught on video berating a restaurant customer for speaking Spanish to a staff member.
In a tweet on Wednesday, Tan flexed her own Spanish-speaking skills with a simple message to racists:
Translation:
To the racists who believe that someone who speaks Spanish has no right to be in the United States, I say—and in English so they understand— “Fuck you.” pic.twitter.com/agacIgosGJ— Amy Tan (@AmyTan) May 23, 2018
Tan, most famous for her female Chinese American experience novel “The Joy Luck Club,” shows that solidarity for all bilingual Americans is unfortunately necessary in today’s society where racism continues to be fed by the ignorant.
