Starbucks Barista Writes ‘Philippine’ on Woman’s Cup After She Told Them Her Name Was ‘Melissa’
In the past year, Starbucks has been accused of many racist incidents in stores all around the world where baristas will use racist terms for customers who clearly tell them their names. It’s gotten so bad that the company will close all US stores for the day on May 29 to educate workers on racial biases.
Until then, it appears that incidents like these are still occuring. Earlier today, entrepreneur Eugene Capon tweeted the following experience his friend recently had at Starbucks.
I’m pretty sure @Starbucks just had an incident recently about racial profiling and then a local branch used my friends RACE as her name. I’m not sure how you can misspell Melissa this bad. This was not okay. #Starbucks @NextShark #racialprofiling pic.twitter.com/JzTHVHBLI9

Capon told NextShark that the incident happened at Starbucks on 4th & Seneca in Seattle, Washington. His friend, whose name is “Melissa” and is of Filipino descent, says that she gave her name to the male barista, but he ended up writing “Philippine” on her cup instead.
“She had been a regular and the guy had taken her orders a couple time before but was relatively new still,” Capon told NextShark.
The barista allegedly did it as a “joke” and gave a half-hearted apology when “Melissa” confronted him. Although she didn’t ask for a manager at the time, she sent a letter to Starbucks HQ when she got to work and posted the following on Facebook.
