One of India’s Greatest Police Officers Commits Suicide While Battling Cancer
A revered police officer in India, who earned the moniker “supercop” for his numerous high-profile accomplishments, ended his own life on Friday.
Local senior officials confirmed that 55-year-old Himanshu Roy killed himself in the western city of Mumbai, according to the BBC.
Roy, who had taken a long medical leave after he was diagnosed with cancer, reportedly shot himself at his home using his service firearm.
A suicide note was recovered from Roy’s house, stating that he was ending his life because he had been battling cancer for the past two years, according to The Times of India. He noted that his condition caused him to suffer from depression.
Serving as the head of the anti-terrorism unit in the state of Maharashtra, the legendary cop is credited with solving numerous sensational cases in India. His most notable cases include journalist Jyotirmoy Dey’s murder, the double murder involving Vijay Palande, Laila Khan’s murder, and the murder of law graduate Pallavi Purkhayasta.

Days before his death, Roy reportedly told a former state minister that “chemotherapy has its limitations.”
