An unidentified middle-aged Japanese man has killed 2 and injured at least 17 others in a brutal knife attack at a bus stop outside Tokyo on Tuesday.

The attacker, believed to be in his 50’s, reportedly carried two knives and began stabbing through a crowd of schoolgirls waiting for their bus at around 7:45 a.m. in Kawasaki City. The group of children were students at a local private Catholic school, between the ages of 6 and 12.

Among those killed are an 11-year-old student and an adult, identified as Satoshi Oyama, 39, a Japanese Foreign Ministry official whose daughter attends the school. Three young girls and a woman in her 40’s also remain in the hospital with serious injuries.

The attack ended when the man allegedly moved several meters away from the children and stabbed himself in the neck, committing suicide, according to the Japanese police. The police have yet to find a motive for the harrowing attacks.
