There have been more than 78,000 new COVID-19 cases in India in the past 24 hours as the global number of infections surpassed 25 million.

Data from John Hopkins University shows that there were 78,512 new infections recorded in India on Sunday August 30.

It followed an earlier daily total of 85,687 on August 26. That figure is the highest single-day total of any single nation.

Cases on both days surpassed the highest number of daily infections in the US, which saw a spike of 77,299 new cases on July 17, the BBC reported.

India's first known cases of COVID-19, reported in late January, were three university students who had been studying in Wuhan, China, Business Insider previously reported.

Wuhan is where the virus first began to spread at the end of 2019.

India now has more than 3.2 million confirmed COVID-19 cases. The number of recorded cases is likely far lower than the actual number. The figure is a cumulative total, and many of the 3.2 million will have since recovered.

The US has the world's highest cumulative number of confirmed cases — around 6 million as of Monday morning.

Globally, cumulative cases stand at around 25.2 million, according to data from John Hopkins University. The 25 million milestone was passed early on Sunday.

The coronavirus has killed more than 500,000 people in the six months since Chinese health officials reported the outbreak to the World Health Organization.
