Thai Teens Dig Up Dead Dog to Eat, Get Rabies

Thirteen teenagers in Mukdahan, Thailand, were hospitalized after digging the grave of a dead dog and eating its body, unaware that it had rabies.

They were given vaccines to prevent them from acquiring the virus, which is normally transmitted through animal saliva.

According to Thairath, the dog was killed by authorities on Monday when it attacked residents and tested positive for rabies. Its head was severed and sent to a veterinary center for analysis.

Mukdahan’s Department of Livestock also provided vaccines to other pets in the province to prevent the spread of the virus.

The trade for dog meat is illegal in Thailand. Most don’t eat it too, though some areas reportedly consume it as delicacy.

As per ABC, dogs are traditionally eaten by many in China, South Korea and Vietnam. In Korea, some believe that the pain inflicted upon the animal before its slaughter improves flavor, the outlet said.
