Husband Left Broke and Homeless After Indonesian Wife Gambles Away $4.9 Million

A husband in the U.K. has been bankrupted after his wife racked up a £3.5 million (roughly $4.9 million) gambling debt on his dime.

Christopher Forte, 36, is a software contractor who met Juliana Posman in 2010 working at the same IT firm in Eghamthe U.K. Forte fell in love with her within a month of meeting her, according to The Daily Mail.

Posman, who’s from Indonesia and holds an MBA, has been in England since she was 20 and previously worked at the Grosvenor Hotel in London, where she met businessmen Isaac Kaye and Warren Roiter. She told Forte that she made money betting against the DAX, Germany’s stock exchange index.

She reportedly made up to £500 ($700) a day on spread betting websites, while occasionally losing around £200 ($281). One time, she lost over £1.3million ($1.8 million) in a day, according to Forte. Impressed by her persistence that she would “strike it rich,” he proposed to her and they married in 2014.

They married in a £20,000 ($28,000) wedding ceremony at the Grosvenor Hotel, followed by a second wedding months later for her 100 Chinese-Indonesian relatives in Indonesia, and a honeymoon in Bali.

However, thing started getting fishy shortly after their marriage when Posman allegedly kept asking Forte and his parent’s for “loans,” claiming she needed the money to show assets of £5 million to get a visa.

“In retrospect it was absolute rubbish. I’m British, she was my wife, and we could have got her a legitimate visa for a couple of thousand,” Forte told The Daily Mail. “But I didn’t realise that – I was in love. I would wake up and she’d be in tears, saying “I need another £15,000.’”

“She’d be crying as she asked me if I could raid my savings, sell my Premium Bonds, or ask my parents. If I asked any questions she’d get more upset, say I didn’t trust her, and walk out saying ‘You don’t want me any more,'” he added.

Forte lent her £45,000, while his retired parents gave her £131,330. In April 2016, Forte received a letter from Roiter, saying that he and Kaye had lent Posman £2.5 million. Unbeknownst to Forte, Posman told the businessmen her husband would guarantee the loans.

Soon after, it was discovered that Posman had actually given £750,000 to her brother, £250,000 to her parents and lost millions gambling in the stock market.

“Gambling addiction is one of the worst because of the damage it does families. She didn’t marry me for my money, but maybe she saw I was a soft touch. She doesn’t deserve a visa,” Forte said.

Posman agreed to pay back the £169,000 to Forte and his parents at a rate of £1,700 a month when they divorced last August. However, she allegedly never made a payment and declared bankruptcy instead.

Now in financial ruin, Forte is living with a relative for the time being, while Posman is staying in a seaside flat in Hove, East Sussex. Kay and Roiter have reportedly written off the £2.5million owed to them.
