NY Attorney General Resigns After Ex-Girlfriend Says He Called Her His ‘Brown Slave’
New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman resigned from his position just hours after the New Yorker published a damning piece alleging that he committed physical abuse against four women.
One of his victims was Harvard-educated Tanya Selvaratnam, a Sri Lankan activist writer who had a year-long relationship with Schneiderman.
In her interview with the publication, she revealed that the sixty-three-year-old would refer to her as his “brown slave” while telling her to refer to him as “Master.”
Selvaratnam described the affair as “a fairy tale that became a nightmare” which included violence in the bedroom and demands for threesomes.
“Sometimes, he’d tell me to call him Master, and he’d slap me until I did,” Selvaratnam was quoted as saying.
“He started calling me his ‘brown slave’ and demanding that I repeat that I was ‘his property. the slaps started after we’d gotten to know each other. It was at first as if he were testing me. Then it got stronger and harder. It wasn’t consensual. This wasn’t sexual playacting. This was abusive, demeaning, threatening behavior.”
As the violence grew worse, his sexual demands also became more difficult for Selvaratnam to accept.
“He was obsessed with having a threesome and said it was my job to find a woman,” she said. “He said he’d have nothing to look forward to if I didn’t and would hit me until I agreed.”
Adamant on not adding a second woman to their bed, Selvaratnam experienced even more abuse at the hands of Schneiderman who eventually started spitting and choking her as well.
“He was cutting off my ability to breathe,” she said, adding that it became the norm that, “we could rarely have sex without him beating me.”
Selvaratnam said the attorney general was often intoxicated when the abuse happens and that he also would push her to drink.
According to Selvaratnam, she was able to leave the abusive relationship with the help of a friend.
In a statement following the exposé, Schneiderman said: “In the privacy of intimate relationships, I have engaged in role-playing and other consensual sexual activity. I have not assaulted anyone. I have never engaged in non-consensual sex, which is a line I would not cross.”
A well-known champion of women’s rights. Schneiderman was most recently a vocal supporter of the #MeToo movement against sexual harassment. He notably took legal action against the film mogul Harvey Weinstein and demanded greater compensation for the victims of Weinstein’s sexual crimes.
