Controversial Travel Company Invites Foreigners to Become Farmers in North Korea

While North Korea has been making headlines on alleged crazy executions and tourist abduction, one company is inviting foreigners to serve the country as farmers.

According to The Daily Caller, Young Pioneer Tours, a travel company in China, just offered a tourist package that includes farming the country’s land.

Tourists are fittingly called “pioneers,” and they shall “step very far from the beaten track and go see how life living and working on a cooperative farm really is.”

Pioneers will be working at Chilgol Farm, located just outside Pyongyang. The site is known to grow cabbage, plums, rice, tobacco and sesame seeds, among others. In addition to farming, pioneers will also get the chance to tour Pyongyang, the Demilitarized Zone and other attractions.

However, it must be noted that the United States warns citizens against travel to North Korea. American tourists must avoid “the serious risk of arrest and long-term detention under North Korea’s system of law enforcement, which imposes unduly harsh sentences, including for actions that in the United States would not be considered crimes and which threaten U.S. citizen detainees with being treated in accordance with ‘wartime law of the DPRK.’”

Earlier this year, Otto Frederick Warmbier, an American college student, was detained and sentenced to 15 years of hard labor. He was accused of stealing a poster during a five-day trip which was also organized by Young Pioneer Tours.

North Korea convicts those who disrespect its former and current leaders, engage in unsanctioned political activities, interact among citizens without authorization, remove or tamper political slogans and bring porn, among other violations.
