Janitor lives frugally his whole life, leaves behind $8 million for a local library and hospital
After passing away at 92-years-old, a Vermont man left behind $8 million dollars for his local library and hospital. The surprising part? Ronald Read was a former gas station employee and janitor for his whole life.
Read lead a modest life style in which he lived frugally. He spent when he had to, but other than that, he saved his money to use it for good.
As for how he accumulated such wealth, Read spent his free time investing in the stock market. Read’s attorney Laurie Rowell said he made investment in companies that “grew substantially” over the years. At his death, Read was said to have own shares from 95 different blue chip companies.
As to how Read lived , Rowell said the man was known for always wearing a flannel shirt and baseball cap. Rowell said the man was so frugal that when Read would visit him, Read would parked far away just to avoid the meter.
The interesting part about Read was that no one knew about his wealth. This included his family and friends, no one knew he was rich because he was living so frugally.
When Read passed away, he left behind the majority of his wealth for two local organizations– the Brooks Memorial Library and the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital.
I find it incredible that Read lived such a modest lifestyle with that type of money. Not only did he live modestly, but also selflessly because upon his death, he donated his wealth to his community. A man truly blessed with a heart made of gold.
