No Excuses: This Starlapse Was Shot in a Light Polluted Area with Cheap Gear

You can always find a reason why you shouldn’t go out and try to shoot something. You don’t have the right gear, for example, or there’s too much light pollution in your area. Let this short timelapse serve as an example of why you should ignore those excuses.

Netherlands-based amateur photographer Wahid captured this short starlapse by pointing his DSLRs out his attic window and capturing the view available to him.

As he explains on Reddit, the first scene was shot with a Nikon D7200 and Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 lens at ISO 320, 13 seconds, and f/2.8. The second was shot with a much more basic Nikon D3200 and Samyang 14mm f/2.8 (a kit that’ll cost you about $650 total) at ISO 800, 13 seconds, and f/2.8. He then used this YouTube tutorial as a guide to process the photos and create the final video.

It’s not the kind of “spectacular” timelapse you’ve probably gotten used to seeing on PetaPixel over the years, but it drives home an important point: don’t make excuses. You gear is good enough, and even the view from your attic might just suffice.
