Underage Malaysian Teens are Livestreaming Their Bodies for $20, Exposé Reveals
An undercover exposé conducted by a local news outlet in Malaysia has uncovered an online community that focuses on video livestreaming applications where Malaysian women reportedly perform lewd acts for money.
The investigation found Malaysian girls as young as 14 years old reportedly livestreaming themselves and undressing in exchange for virtual currency, the Metro Ahad reported (via Star).
“An investigation found many teen girls broadcasting themselves shimmying and showing off their bodies to captivate anyone willing to pay them,” the paper revealed.
Male audiences reportedly pay virtual coins called “Diamonds” which are later redeemed for real money. The amount can range from 99 sen ($0.24) to 90 Malaysian Ringgits ($21).
“In school, I don’t get much attention but now, because of this app, I do,” said one 14-year-old girl livestreamer who identified herself as Farah.
The advent of several personal broadcasting apps have made livestreaming a popular means to earn easy cash. While many do so by doing traditional broadcasts (vlogging, playing music, eating or playing video games), the platform has recently been used for nudity or sexual content.
One such app is Bigo Live, a live-streaming video app made by a Singaporean team which has become a popular venue for young users performing lewd streams. The app has become one of the most preferred apps by Southeast Asian youth especially in Singapore, Laos, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, and Malaysia.
