VSCO Shutters New York Office and Lays Off Whole NYC Staff
Film emulation and photo sharing company VSCO confirmed today that they are shutting down their New York City office and laying off the staff there in order to “centralize” their workforce at the company’s headquarters in Oakland, CA.
When it was opened less than 6 months ago, VSCO’s NYC office served as both an east coast hub for the company and a studio that VSCO’s Community could use for free. Both the workspace and the studio are now being shut down.
In a statement confirming the news to TechCrunch, a VSCO spokesperson emphasized that centralization, not business issues, are the cause of the upheaval:
In an effort to align operations with our evolving business needs, we are centralizing and expanding our team in Oakland at VSCO’s HQ, and have closed our New York office in the process….
We’re focused on building the best tools and platform for our community members to express themselves, and we’re working alongside some incredible brands to help them connect with VSCO’s creator network.
It’s unclear how much of its staff VSCO is letting go—the majority of the company’s workforce is based out of the Oakland office—and some NYC employees were reportedly offered the chance to relocate to the home office.
VSCO also has an office in Denver; however, at this time, it doesn’t seem as if that office is affected.
