Michelle Kwan Found Out Her Husband Filed for Divorce on Twitter
Retired Olympic figure skater Michelle Kwan is facing a not-so-amicable divorce with Clay Pell, her husband of four years.
It even kicked off in probably the most unpleasant way possible as Kwan reportedly learned of her husband’s divorce filing in California via a tweet without any prior warning.
According to New York Daily News, the 36-year-old former Olympian filed for divorce from Pell in Rhode Island a day later.
“Plaintiff initially learned that the Defendant had filed for divorce in California by means of a ‘Tweet’ on March 29, 2017 and shortly thereafter from the online copy of an article published in the New York Daily News,” according to court documents obtained by the Providence Journal. It’s unclear which tweet is referenced in the complaint as none currently exists in Pell’s official account.
According to Kwan, they last lived together in November, as they were trying to resolve marital issues amicably. However, Pell reportedly blindsided her by filing the divorce in March.
Kwan also said she tried to serve her husband divorce papers 10 times in April but was unsuccessful that she ended up just posting the documents on the front door.
Citing irreconcilable differences as the cause of their separation, Kwan is now looking to have the California case dismissed and have it moved to Rhode Island, where the former couple lived together. Pell has reportedly hired celebrity lawyer Joe Mannis and intends for Kwan to pay his legal fees.
While the couple did not have any children, they purchased a four-bedroom home worth $1.5 million back in 2014.
Neither of the two has actually moved into the 1.9-acre estate yet which is still waiting for a certificate of occupancy. However, Pell, a 35-year-old lawyer, has already “placed an air mattress at the residence and suitcases clearly marked ‘Pell.’”
According to People, Pell made a statement when he filed for divorce in March:
“It is with deep regret that I share that Michelle and my marriage is coming to an end,” Pell said. “This is a sad and difficult turn of events for our family. I love Michelle, and wish her the very best as her life takes her in a new direction.”
The couple, who met in April 2011, were married on January 19, 2013, in Providence, Rhode Island.
