A famed Apple analyst said that the company will ditch fingerprint readers for face scanning technology in future iPhones (AAPL)
A new note sent to investors by famed Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (which we first saw reported by 9to5Mac) said that all future iPhones will have Face ID in place of Touch ID.
Apple introduced a third iPhone for the first time this year; a special, tenth-anniversary edition of the device — aptly named iPhone X (ten) — that sports an almost all-screen design with just a notch at the top, where the sensors that enable the face-scanning technology reside.
The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, on the other hand, still use the "old-fashioned" Touch ID, but Kuo believes Apple will do away with it next year, to "capitalize on its clear lead in 3D sensing design and production for smartphones," and keep an edge over the competition.
Rumor had it that Apple long worked to actually integrate Touch ID under the phone's display, but encountered a number of technical issues that ultimately stopped the development.
It was then believed Apple would continue working on it, potentially for a reintroduction with 2018's iPhones, but Kuo is confident this won't be the case. There might be some Android phones that feature embedded fingerprint readers, but Apple's devices look like they won't.
Just a few days ago, Kuo wrote that the iPad, too, may move to a new design that replaces Touch ID with Face ID, although it's unclear whether the popular tablet will see an iPhone X-like visual overhaul as well.
