When 26-year-old Jane Goodall first set foot in Tanzania in 1960, we knew nearly nothing about how chimpanzees acted in the wild.

Her work opened up an entirely new world for researchers, and showed a captivated public just how intelligent and social chimps were. Chimpanzees modified tools, waged primitive wars over territory, and calmed each other with pats, tickles, and hugs. In the new National Geographic documentary Jane, previously unseen footage from those early years is propelled by an exhilarating Philip Glass score. It was all captured by Hugo van Lawick — the famed wildlife filmmaker and photographer who arrived in Gombe Stream National Park in 1962, and married Goodall two years later. Read more...
