Chinese Teen Falls in a Coma After High School Makes Her Stand Outside in the Cold as Punishment
A teenager from Guigang, in southern China’s Guangxi Province, was left in a deep state of coma with multiple organ failure after she was allegedly made to stand outside on a chilly night as punishment.
Yang Haoyue, a student of Guigang City Daxu Township Second Junior High School, who is believed to be 13 or 14, was rushed to the hospital on the evening of Nov. 29, Chinese media, The Paper, reported via South China Morning Post.
According to the allegations, Yang and eight other girls in her school dormitory were punished by their teachers for talking after bed time. They were all ordered to take their slippers off and stand on the playground barefoot while in their pajamas on a very cold night, with temperatures recorded at around 13 degrees Celsius (55 degrees Fahrenheit).
As if freezing outside wasn’t punishment enough, the girls were then ordered to get on all fours and proceed to do a push-up position.
“They told us to get down, with our hands supporting our body and if we dared to move, the punishment would be increased by 30 minutes,” one of the students told News Online broadcast by Guangxi Network Television on Sunday.
A few minutes into their punishment, Yang began shaking uncontrollably. She had what seemed to be a seizure and eventually fainted, the student recounted.
Yang was immediately rushed to Guigang People’s Hospital and was resuscitated by the medical personnel. However, she complained about chest pains before passing out again for the second time.
The teenager is being closely monitored in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital. She reportedly developed multiple organ failure since the last time she passed out on Dec. 11.
After conducting several interviews with the parents and students of the school, it was discovered that severe punishments were being used by the teachers. School officials declined to give comments regarding the allegations.
Teachers turned away News Online when the media outlet visited the school, which was briefly locked by security guards.
It is also unclear if they will shoulder the cost of Yang’s hospital bill, which is now at 20,000 yuan ($3,028) per day.
Daxu township police are now looking into the case. Officers are studying the surveillance footage to support the allegations made by the parents and pupils of the school.
