Kelly Marie Tran Breaks Down at ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ World Premiere

A week before the anticipated official release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the cast members hit the “Battle of Crait”-themed red carpet at the world premiere of the film in downtown Los Angeles.

During the star-studded event, Star Wars newcomer Kelly Marie Tran was caught on camera unable to contain her tears of joy.

“They told me not to cry,” Tran says as she began to tear up during an interview with Andi Gutierrez of The Star Wars Show. It indeed became an emotional moment for Tran who plays Rose Tico, the first Asian-American female lead in the billion-dollar global franchise.

The Vietnamese-American film actress, known for her performance in CollegeHumor Originals, expressed her gratitude to The Last Jedi producer Ram Bergman for allowing her to be part of the eighth episodic film in the Star Wars series.

Fans also captured Tran sharing an emotional embrace with co-star Daisy Ridley.

In a recent interview with Buzzfeed, the Vietnamese-American actress attributed her landing the part to an oversight that she actually never seen a Star Wars movie until she got the part. She explained: “I didn’t have this expectation of what I thought this person should be like; I wasn’t trying to model her after someone I’d seen in a movie.”

In the film, her character Rose Tico serves in the Resistance as a maintenance worker during their conflict with the First Order, whom she had hated since her childhood. Tico’s sister, Paige, (played by Vietnamese actress Ngô Thanh Vân aka Veronica Ngo) was a gunner in the Resistance.

Rose Tico and the rest of the resistance will square off against Kylo Ren and the First Order when “The Last Jedi” hits the big screens worldwide on December 15.
