J.J. Redick Filmed on Video Calling Chinese NBA Fans ‘Chinks’

Philadelphia 76ers shooting guard J.J. Redick is under fire after calling his Chinese fans “chinks” in a video that has gone viral.

The video was produced by Chinese media company Tencent to wish China a Happy Lunar New Year.

Two cuts of the video were produced, but naturally the one cut that shows Redick using the racial slur is going viral.

“I just wanted to wish all the NBA chink fans in China a very happy Chinese new year.” Redick says in the video.

People have been voicing their outrage on Twitter demanding answers.

Seriously？JJ Redick used the racist word “Chink” in the official NBA video for celebrating Chinese New Year to Chinese fans. We all know what that means and how disrespectful and insulting it is to Chinese. And we need an official explanation to this. @NBA @espn

Redick has gone on Twitter acknowledging the incident, but didn’t give much of an explantion.

Just saw a video that is being circulated of me wishing a happy new year to NBA fans in China.Clearly I was tongue tied, as the word I purportedly said is not in my vocabulary. I’m disappointed that anyone would think I would use that word. I love & respect our friends in China.
