Reported Sony Xperia XZ2 images leak out ahead of launch
We’re just days away from the likely announcement of the Sony Xperia XZ2, and yet the leaked images we’ve seen haven’t provided much consensus on the design, but perhaps the most convincing image yet has just emerged, showing off the phone in full ahead of a likely launch at MWC 2018, with Sony recently teasing of new debutantes there.
The high-quality render pictured below was obtained by reputable leaker Evan Blass, and you can see that the Xperia XZ2 shown in it has a completely new design with smaller bezels than previous Sony phones and what looks to be an 18:9 aspect ratio.
You can also see what’s likely power, volume and shutter keys on one edge of the phone, while the rear seems to house a single-lens camera and you can also just make out a fingerprint scanner on the back.
Writing for Venture Beat, Blass adds that according to “a person who spent time with the devices”, the Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact will be very similar to this phone, with the XZ2 sporting a 5.7-inch display while the XZ2 Compact has a 5-inch one.
Both phones will reportedly use the top-end Snapdragon 845 chipset and run Android Oreo. Supposedly they both have full HD screens protected by Gorilla Glass 5, and 18MP f/1.8 cameras on their rear. That’s the same snapper and the Xperia XZ Premium.
Not quite identical
Apparently the actual layout of the camera components will be different on the XZ2 Compact though, but they don’t specify how.
There are seemingly some other design differences too, as while the source claims that the Sony Xperia XZ2 has an aluminum frame and glass back (in black, silver, green and pink), they say the XZ2 Compact has a polycarbonate back.
Both phones are said to be water resistant, and both apparently have stereo speakers on the front, but the standard XZ2 is additionally said to have a haptic feedback system that syncs up vibrations to the sound – something that’s been rumored before.
Finally, they add that the XZ2 apparently has a 3,180mAh battery that can be charged via USB-C or wirelessly, while the Xperia XZ2 Compact is said to have a 2,870mAh one which only offers wired charging.
As ever, these are just rumors so you should take them with a pinch of salt, but coming from a leaker as reputable as Blass and this close to launch there’s a good chance this is pretty accurate.
