American Tourist Charged With Murdering Cambodian Masseuse Who Refused Sex
American tourist Shawn Daniel Sanchez has been arrested and charged with killing a Cambodian masseuse by slitting her throat after she refused his sexual advances, Reuters reports.
Sanchez, 24, killed the woman last Tuesday in the southern province of Kep and was arrested by Cambodian police the following day in the neighboring province of Kampot.
The victim was identified as 27-year-old Lork Sok Keang, a professional masseuse at Lida Khmer Massage in Kep’s Crab Market. Keang, a married woman with a young son, was reportedly the daughter-in-law of a deputy commander in the Kep provincial military police.
According to Kampot provincial police chief Major General Mao Chanmakthurith, the suspect went to Linda Khmer Massage on Tuesday night and attempted to have sex with the victim, who refused his advances.
“He caught the victim and tried to rape her,” Major Gen. Chanmakthurith was quoted by Khmer Times as saying. “She fought back and tried to flee and he got even angrier. He then killed her by slashing her throat with a pocketknife, killing her instantly at the massage shop.”
Following the suspect’s arrest, the authorities posted images of him on their website. He was detained and investigated at the police station in Kep.
Sanchez made his first court appearance on March 1, in which he was expected to face charges of attempted rape and first-degree murder, which carries a life sentence in Cambodia.
