Why it matters: This is the first time a South Korean leader has cross the border since 2007 when the last summit took place. Additionally, this is the first time a member of the Kim dynasty has cross the DMZ since the end of the Korean War in 1953.
The summit has been planned for quite some time, according to ABC. Previously, two meetings were held between high-level officials from North and South Korea, and the two countries marched under one flag during the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
Before the start of the summit, Kim wrote the following in the visitor’s log at the Peace House: “The new history starts from now on. At this starting point of the history of the era peace.”
The White House released the following statement in regards to the meeting: “We are hopeful that talks will achieve progress toward a future of peace and prosperity for the entire Korean Peninsula. The United States appreciates the close coordination with our ally, the Republic of Korea, and looks forward to continuing robust discussions in preparation for the planned meeting between President Donald J Trump and Kim Jong Un in the coming weeks.”
