Buzzy software company Carta is raising funding at an $800 million valuation

  • Venture firms Meritech Capital and Tribe Capital are coleading the round, according to multiple sources. 
  • Carta has raised about $70 million since 2012 from investors, including Menlo Ventures, Social Capital, and Union Square Ventures. 

Software company Carta is raising $80 million in a funding round that values the company at $800 million, Business Insider has learned.

According to multiple people familiar with the talks, venture firms Meritech Capital and Tribe Capital are coleading the round.

Carta is just one among a series of software-focused startups to raise funding at hefty valuations lately, with companies like Airtable and Plaid both commanding billion-dollar-plus valuations in recent months. 

Carta, which changed its name from eShares last year, provides equity-management software to businesses. Since it was founded in 2012, the company has raised around $70 million from investors, including Menlo Ventures, Social Capital, Union Square Ventures, and Industry Ventures. 

Representatives for Meritech Capital and Tribe Capital did not return requests for comment. A spokesperson for Carta declined to comment.
