'Captain Marvel' had the third-biggest March opening weekend in movie history, bringing in $153 million (DIS)

"Captain Marvel" brought in an estimated $153 million over the weekend.
That's the third-largest March opening-weekend in movie history.
It's also the seventh-biggest opening ever for a Marvel Cinematic Universe title.

Carol Danvers didn't just kick some Skrull butt this weekend, but also internet trolls.

Despite the efforts by some online who tried to bring down Marvel's first standalone female superhero movie by flooding sites like Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb with negative reviews and comments so the movie's audience score would be low, "Captain Marvel" powered through to earn an estimated $153 million its opening weekend.

That makes it the third-biggest opening for the month of March, behind "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" ($166 million), "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" ($146.5 million), and "Iron Man 3" ($174.1 million).

The performance is also a welcomed sight for the domestic box office, which is coming off of a 17-year low in ticket sales for February.

Because of that, audiences were clearly starving to go to something good at their local multiplex. Disney capitalized on the box-office low with its big Marvel Studios release starring Brie Larson, who will also have a major role to play in the upcoming "Avengers: Endgame" on over 4,300 screens. This led to huge coin for the movie.

Thursday night previews saw the movie take in $20.7 million, the fifth largest ever in preview showings for a MCU movie. That was followed by $61.4 million Friday and $53.1 million Saturday.

The movie, directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck ("Half Nelson"), also bested the first female superhero movie to get a theatrical release in the last 10 years, 2017's "Wonder Woman." Directed by Patty Jenkins — who is hard at work on the sequel, "Wonder Woman 1984" — the movie had an opening weekend of $103.2 million.
