New ‘Super M’ Group is Basically the ‘Avengers of K-Pop’ But Fans Are LIVID

A new K-Pop group composed of seven artists from current existing male groups under SM Entertainment will debut in the U.S. this October.

Super M, dubbed the “Avengers of K-Pop,” consists of Taemin from SHINee, Baekhyun and Kai from EXO, Taeyong and Mark from NCT, and Lucas and Ten from WayV.

SM Entertainment announced Super M’s formation in partnership with Capitol Music Group and its independent label Caroline, at the 2019 Capitol Congress on Wednesday.

Following the announcement, a new website and social media accounts for Super M were launched on Instagram and Twitter.

Taemin holds the longest career in the group, having debuted as a member of SHINee in 2008. Baekhyun and Kai debuted as members of EXO in 2012.

Taeyong, Mark, and Ten originally debuted as members of NCT U, a sub-unit of NCT, in 2016, with Lucas joining in February 2018. Ten and Lucas then debuted as members of WayV, NCT’s China-based sub-unit, in January 2019.

“This is a total new formation of a group and artist, and also a totally new form for the business,” Chris Lee, A&R executive at SM Entertainment, told Forbes. “We’re maintaining their groups, their solo careers, and on top of this we have this ‘Avengers’ group to pull them together. There’s already an Iron-Man, a Thor, etc; and just like how the ‘Avengers’ can have their own successful movies, there is a different kind of energy when they are together as the ‘Avengers.’”

“We are now creating that as a point of business. We want to create a synergy between their groups, them as solo acts, and the Super M group to create a big wave in this K-Pop industry.”

As with many groups in K-Pop, the name “Super M” supposedly carries meaning, with “Super” referring to the members’ synergy and “M” standing for “matrix” and “master,” The Korea Times noted.

The announcement of the group, however, drew mixed reactions from K-Pop fans, with some criticizing the move and starting the hashtag #SuperGroupDisbandParty on Twitter.

The opposing fans are arguing that Super M is unnecessary and that SM Entertainment should instead focus on promoting the individual groups, especially EXO.
