Overturned Truck With 6,000 Gallons of Condensed Milk is a Tragedy for Vietnamese Coffee

A tanker truck overturned off the 5 Freeway in Lebec, California, south of Bakersfield, on Monday morning. While there were fortunately no reported injuries from the accident, the biggest tragedy may have been the endangerment of 6,000 gallons of condensed milk that the truck was carrying.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the truck was carrying the equivalent of 96,000 cups of condensed milk, a key ingredient in Vietnamese coffee. Given that a standard serving of Vietnamese coffee, which is also popularly served iced, requires around two tablespoons of condensed milk, along with fresh brewed coffee, the truck was carrying enough precious condensed milk to make 768,000 Vietnamese coffees.

Fortunately, clean up crews worked starting at 6:00 a.m. to pump out any condensed milk that could be saved as well as repair the guardrail that the truck crashed through. The clean up was estimated by the California Highway Patrol to take until at least 3:30 p.m.

It is unknown what caused the crash, though inclement weather looks to be the culprit. It is unclear how many Vietnamese coffees in condensed milk were saved, but we are sending our thoughts and prayers to every potential cup.
