There have been a lot of free ebooks on offer in recent years. There's always been a healthy market for design books written by experts and this isn't likely to change anytime soon. And sometimes it is best to splash your cash and receive high quality content in return. 

But the quality of free and 'freemium' content has improved vastly, and the quality is now often on a similar level to the books you'd pay good money for. Obviously few people can afford to print and distribute free physical books, but the age of digital content has meant that the electronic book offers a fantastic and very cheap way to spread literature.
