Japanese Company’s New Smart Pajamas Monitor Vital Signs, Sleeping Habits

Smart pajamas that monitor vital signs and activity levels caught the attention of guests at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas on Sunday.

The smart jammies, known as the e-skin Sleep & Lounge collection, come from Tokyo-based Xenoma, which develops “next-generation smart apparel ‘e-skin’ as a human-friendly man-machine interface.”

Aside from monitoring vital signs like breathing and heart rate, the innovative pajamas perform other functions, such as keeping track of sleeping patterns and preventing accidental falls.

“[e-skin Sleep & Lounge] analyzes the wearer’s sleep condition and automatically adjusts the room environment based on their sleep conditions, while also enabling everyday monitoring of their behavior and fall detection,” Xenoma noted.

According to the company, the apparel will particularly prove helpful for elderly people, offering more convenience than conventional smart wristbands that require daily charging and constant remembering.

“Until now, conventional technologies for monitoring have been limited to privacy-invading cameras and troublesome smartwatches. However, e-skin Sleep & Lounge has the same comfort and natural design as casual wear, and can monitor just by putting it on.”

The innovative pajamas come in two styles: a loose, airy, lightweight version (e-skin Sleep) and a jersey kangaroo-pocket sweatsuit (e-skin Lounge).

Xenoma received one of CES’s innovation awards for the collection.

Xenoma will debut the e-skin Sleep & Lounge collection in Japan through its partnership with Tokyo-based Urban Research in May.

The U.S., on the other hand, can expect the pajamas to arrive in the springtime, according to the company.
