‘Protect Our Elders’ by Eastern People to Donate All Profits to Charity
Asian communities everywhere have been left reeling since the shocking and heartbreaking assault and robbery of an elderly Chinese man collecting cans in San Francisco hit social media last week.
please share this with your friends & family. this is so low, the older man was just trying to make ends meet for his family. he didn’t deserve this. this is ignorant, inhumane, & sickening. i’m praying for this man and his family. if you have any information, please reach out. pic.twitter.com/545xHFwPm4

Michael Wong of the Community Youth Center of San Francisco (CYCSF) revealed that the center has been assisting the elderly man report the crime to the police, but he initially refused to accept charitable donations out of pride.
For many in the Asian American community, this kind of cultural attitude is all too familiar. They are the older generations who struggle quietly and refuse to ask for or accept assistance. Fortunately, the elderly man’s family has since graciously decided to accept help, but we should also continue to do what we can to strengthen our communities to make them safer for the most vulnerable among us.
Eastern People, a cultural clothing collective designed by Asians for Asians, has launched a special design with a message communities everywhere need to embrace: Protect our elders. All profits from the sales of the shirt will be donated to charity.
The t-shirts, which are made of soft 100% combed cotton jersey, come in both black and white.
What charity are we planning to give it to? We will donate all profits from the shirt sales to the Bayview Victim Family Fund set up by the CYCSF on GoFundMe, the only official fundraising page for the elderly man, for as long as they are collecting funds. For 50 years, CYCSF has fostered an empowering community for low-income, high-need, and at-risk Asian Pacific American, Latino and African American youth.
According to CYCSF, the funds raised through their campaign “will go to help the family financially with rent, utilities, and other bills. The funds will be held in a CYC account and will be distributed to the family periodically to help pay for their financial needs.”
If for any reason the fundraiser stops accepting funds, we are currently working with several non-profit charity organizations that will help us direct what we collect to initiatives to take care of the elderly in our communities.
Will we post updates on the funds collected? Absolutely. No matter how much we make, we’ll make an announcement on our progress and when the funds are on their way to CYCSF’s account on our site and social media accounts.

Thank you for helping us create a safer and stronger community that looks out for those who need our protection. Let’s make sure no one else’s parents or grandparents have to experience something like this.
